About.
The Kravets Gallery specialises in sourcing, researching and presenting sacred and devotional objects from across the world of eastern Christianity.
While my personal interest in icons is longstanding, it was only while studying for my MSt in Late Antique & Byzantine Studies at Oxford that I considered sharing this somewhat esoteric interest with a broader audience. This website marks the beginning of this venture. My aim is to present a small but carefully considered selection of works: primarily icons, but also occasional pieces of modern or contemporary art that, in their sensibility, interact meaningfully with the intricate and symbolic nature of traditional Christian imagery.
I do not approach icons solely as sacred objects, though their religious function has shaped their history in profound ways. Rather, I regard them as works of art in the fullest sense—part of a continuum that includes the broader medieval artistic traditions of Europe and the Mediterranean. My intention is to place icons within this wider context: to emphasise their aesthetic qualities, their formal innovations, and the ways in which they illuminate the development of Christian visual culture over many centuries.
If you have enquiries about any of the pieces shown here, or if you would like to discuss a work in more detail, please do not hesitate to get in touch!
